In more than 39 years as a civil trial lawyer, Fred Orr has served
as lead trial counsel in hundreds of contested civil cases,
in state and federal court. Mr. Orr’s vast experience in handling
complex civil litigation, involving jury trials, non-jury trials, and appeals,
uniquely qualifies him as a mediator.
Mr. Orr was awarded his Bachelor of Arts in Law degree from Emory University
in 1963. In 1965, he received his Bachelor of Laws degree from Emory
University School of Law, where he was on the Emory law review, The
Journal of Public Law. Mr. Orr has been continuously engaged in
the private practice of law since 1965. Since 1976, he has been a partner
in the firm of Orr and Edwards.
Mr. Orr is a Fellow of The Georgia Bar Foundation. He is a Master in
the Lamar Inn of the American Inns of Court. He is a member
of The Author’s
Court. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Trial Advocates.
In 1983, Mr. Orr was board certified as a Civil Trial Specialist by
the National Board of Trial Advocacy. From 1987 until 1997, Mr. Orr was
an Adjunct Professor of Law at Emory Law School, where he taught litigation
related courses, including Advanced Litigation and Negotiations.
He has been a frequent speaker at continuing legal education
seminars throughout his career. For many years, Mr. Orr was an instructor
at National Institute for Trial Advocacy trial techniques programs.
Mr. Orr is a past Chair of the Litigation Section of the Atlanta Bar
Association. He is a past Chair of the Courts Committee of both the Atlanta
and the DeKalb Bar Associations. He is a past Co-Chair of the Bench and
Bar Committee of the State Bar of Georgia. He is a past Editor of Calendar
Call, the official publication of the General Practice and Trial
Section of the State Bar of Georgia.
Mr. Orr is an active member of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Law
Section of the State Bar of Georgia, the General Practice and Trial Section
of the State Bar of Georgia, and the Atlanta Dispute Resolution Lawyer
Section of the Atlanta Bar Association.
During Mr. Orr’s legal career, the complex civil
litigation in which he has successfully represented clients
at trial and appellate levels includes cases involving: commercial
real estate disputes; insurance coverage disputes; contract
and business disputes; labor and employment disputes; business
torts, including fraud claims; copyright claims; music and
entertainment law; wrongful death claims; professional liability
claims, including medical malpractice claims; catastrophic
personal injury claims, from product defects, premises liability,
construction project accidents, auto and trucking accidents,
and assault and battery; constitutional and public interest
law; equitable claims, including claims for restraining orders,
temporary and permanent injunctions, and other equitable
relief; contested trusts, estates, and guardianships; and
other complex civil litigation.
Mr. Orr is a past Vice President of the Georgia Trial Lawyers
Association, a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers
of America, and a member of the Southern Trial Lawyers Association.
He is a member of the Lawyers Club of Atlanta, and a member
of the Old Warhorse Lawyers Club.
Mr. Orr and his wife, Judge Anne Elizabeth Barnes of the
Court of Appeals of Georgia, live in the Morningside area
of Atlanta. Mr. Orr is the father of four children and has
five grandchildren.
